The main aim for Energy Performance Certificates is to help you reduce your fuel bills and help cut carbon emissions. Like most households across the UK, you're probably starting notice the effect of recent energy price rises on your monthly budget. Industry figures have shown that wholesale gas prices have increased by more than 70% in 2008 alone.
Most UK homes can save up to £300 a year by simply by making small changes to daily habits below we have listed some energy saving tips:

• Reducing your room temperature by 1°C could cut bills by up to 10%.
• Set the thermostat on your hot water cylinder to 60c.
• Don’t leave appliances such as TVs, DVDs, and PCs on standby. 
• Unplug chargers at the mains. 
• Close curtains at night and do not cover radiators.
• Always turn lights off when you leave a room.
• Use half loads or economy settings, if you are not filling up washing machines, dryers or dish washers.
• Place silver foil behind radiators to reflect heat back into room.
• Fill gaps in your skirting boards and floorboards with beading or sealant.
• Insulate your hot water pipes.
• Use energy saving light bulbs. They last up to 10 times longer than ordinary bulbs, and using one can save you around £40 over the lifetime of the bulb. This saving could be around £65 over its lifetime if you're replacing a high wattage incandescent bulb, or one used for more than a few hours a day.
• Only boil as much water as you need (but remember to cover the elements if you're using an electric kettle).
• A dripping hot water tap wastes energy and in one week wastes enough hot water to fill half a bath, so fix leaking taps and make sure they're fully turned off!
  Close your curtains at dusk to stop heat escaping through the windows and check for draughts around windows and doors.
• Set your heating to go off 30 minutes before you leave the house, and come on again 30 minutes before you expect to return.
• Insulate your loft space and consider cavity wall insulation too.
• Use energy efficient light bulbs which use less energy and last up to ten times longer than standard bulbs.
